This is a good addition to the Did You Know? fact section of LaptopMemo. Did you know that according to Eric Schmidt at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona yesterday, 60,000 Android phones are shipped everyday, with 1.8 million handsets per month and over 21.8 million handsets per year, worldwide? Although he failed to say whether or not these devices are being shipped to retailers, or if they are being sent to owners, it’s still impressive.

A multitouch eBook Reader. Let’s see here, why would I need multitouch in my reader? Maybe when I’m waiting for the page to load I can amuse myself by pinching-and-zooming to wait even longer? Or maybe I can just look at how weird and ugly my e-reader is?

It’s unfortunately coming out in May for $250, features a 6-inch, 800×600 display, along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 1GB of storage, microSD and an accelerometer. It can read both ePub and PDF formats. There is no electronic bookstore behind it, so you’ll have to fatten it up with PDFs and ePubs. [E-reader-info via Electronista]

How long did you think it would take? A month? A week? Heck no! A new topic at the MoDaCo forums reveals that a modder has already started work on porting the HTC Desire ROM to the Nexus One. Although it may sound easy since both smartphones are technically the same, with the Desire only having Sense UI, but it’s a bit more difficult than that. Strangely, the ROM doesn’t fit into the Nexus One’s internal storage, so some clipping was needed. Overall though Flash 10.1 works, and the idea of Sense making its way to the Nexus One is one step closer.

Are you jealous of the few people who own a Nokia N900 and are gleefully smiling while using Firefox Mobile (aka Fennec) to browser their useless websites? Well things are about to change. Mozilla's VP of Mobile, Jay Sullivan, went on to say that Firefox for Android would launch"late this year". Why not any sooner? Well, Mozilla couldn’t design Firefox on Java, Android’s way of writing apps, but when Google opened up native C/C++ support, Firefox Mobile was all smiles. Now with Android expanding its horizon in the hearts of users, and more browsers headed to Android soon, the browser battle between Firefox Mobile, Skyfire, Dolphin Browser, and the built-in Android browser will heat up.

And I’m totally okay with that. [TechRadar]

Envious of all of the good Android 2.1 phones flying out of press releases this week? Well, if you happen to own an Android phone made by HTC or Samsung on Sprint you’re in luck. On Twitter Sprint tweeted the above message, and hopefully unlike others they’ll live up to their promises. This should be an OTA update, so you’ll know exactly what to do, come second quarter of 2010.

There wasn’t much we were expecting from RIM, but today we’ve been proven wrong. Today co-CEO , Mike Lazaridis, and Director of Developer Relations gave us a sneak peek of what a future web browser on a BlackBerry might look like. Which is impressive; the browser had a score of 100/100 on the Acid3 Test. Hopefully that was real and not a phony, but you can decide that for yourself in the video embedded for you after the break. HTC HD Mini Debuts At MWC 2010; A Mini HD2

Heard of the HTC HD2? Okay then, you know the Mini too. With a 3.2-inch HVGA display, it’s crisp enough to not make you feel really small against the HD2’s 4.3-inch super touchscreen. Besides the petite appearance, and usual HTC charm (HTC designs some of the best phones you’ve ever seen), you have Sense UI, and in true imitation of the HD2, it uses Windows Mobile 6.5.3, and will not get the new Windows Phone 7 Series announced yesterday. Let me rephrase that: “the disgraced Windows Mobile 6.5.3″. There, that’s better. But remember that when WM7 launches, you’ll want the best hardware you can get right? This isn’t it. Back to the drawing board HTC, you have a Windows Phone 7 smartphone to design. Oh, and it uses 7.2Mbps 900 / 2100 HSPA bands, with a European and Asia release in April. No word on real specs and carriers, but this is MWC 2010 after all, we’ll know soon enough. Promo vid is waiting for you after the jump.

HTC Desire: The Nexus One with Sense and Flash; Your Next Phone

Here it is folks! The HTC Desire, a Nexus One with the same specs and Snapdragon CPU, same 5 megapixel camera, except with more Sense in mind, and a little more style, only excluding the dual-mic feature that its cousin the N1 has. The same 3.7-inch AMOLED screen is also carried over, but instead of the nearly-useless trackball, you get a much cooler trackpad. Things get really cool though on the flipside with the software, where you’ll have the Weather and News widgets, as well as the new HTC Sense UI Friendstream, which allows you to stream your friends from Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. Helicopter view is also present, and wait for, wait for it — Flash 10.1. So tell me what’s better on more practical here, the Nexus One or the Desire? I think I found my next Android phone, that I will buy. But review it first of course. Promo vid after the break.

Aluminum HTC Legend Makes Its Debut At MWC

The true successor to the HTC Hero, the Legend is made out of a single piece of aluminum. Running Android 2.1 with an updated version of Sense UI, a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen with 320 x 480 resolution, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, 600 MHz processor and 512MB ROM (with microSD card slot), as well as 384MB of RAM. GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 1300 mAh is also included. One smart feature that the Legend adds to the Sense UI, as well as the HTC Desire also announced today is “helicopter view”, as HTC calls it. It’s essentially like Expose on your Mac. Pinch the screen and you can see all 7 homescreens with ease. It’s expected late March/early April in Europe with a worldwide launch to be announced. Promo video after the break. [HTC]

Toshiba K01 Smartphone Debuts at MWC with Windows Mobile 6.5

To kick off today’s MWC 2010 coverage, I bring you Toshiba’s smartphone, the K01. It’s a handsome QWERTY slider with a 4.1 capacitive OLED touchscreen, Windows Mobile 6.5, a microSD slot for storage up to 32GB, and a speedy 1Ghz processor. This would be the cousin to the TG02, Toshiba’s update to the original TG01, and is a slim 12.9mm, but still the K01 is not as thin as the aforementioned handsets.  No word on price or release yet, but we’ll know soon enough. PR after the break.

TOSHIBA DEBUTS NEW HANDSETS AND LEADING MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES AT MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2010

· Toshiba previews wide-screen TG02 entertainment phone and K01 with sliding QWERTY keyboard

· Fast 1GHz processors and wide, high-quality capacitive touchscreens on both handsets

· Toshiba’s latest laptops and its vision of multiple interacting devices demonstrated first-hand on the Toshiba stand

· New mobile technologies, including Resolution+, LCD control and VoiceTranslation showcased at Toshiba’s Innovation Hub, Hall 8, Stand 8A111

BARCELONA, 15th February, 2010 – Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd, Mobile Communications Division, today debuts two new mobile handsets for the first time at Mobile World Congress 2010. Expanding Toshiba’s mobile handset range, the TG02 and K01 will offer capacitive touchscreens and fast internal processors, joining Toshiba’s highly successful TG01 Windows® phone, which launched in 2009. Toshiba’s drive to lead innovation in the mobile arena will also be showcased with the display of new mobile technologies, combined with a first-hand demonstration of its multi-screen solutions.

Two new handsets added to Toshiba’s mobile range

The TG02 builds on the super-slim form of the Toshiba TG01 Windows® phone, and is the ideal device for users who demand high-quality entertainment on the go. Sleek in design, the TG02 features a wide 10.4cm (4.1″)[i] VGA capacitive touchscreen, offering a fast, responsive user experience, while the same internal image tuning technology as used on the TG01 delivers rich, high-quality visuals in a slim (9.9mm1) and portable device – making it ideal for viewing movies and images while on the move.

A newly designed and highly-intuitive 3D menu system on the TG02 makes it easy for users to browse though the handset and access a range of entertainment features. Based on the very latest Windows Mobile® 6.5 platform, the TG02 enhances the user experience with its quick and easy operation. An internal 1GHz[ii] processor also makes the TG02 an ideal device for internet browsing, enabling users to quickly access and load websites or stream content.

Joining the TG02 at MWC is the impressive new K01 – a stylish, powerful and easy to use media device optimised for mobile messaging. Featuring a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that makes typing easy and comfortable, the K01 also offers Toshiba’s first-ever Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) capactive 10.4cm (4.1″)1 wide-screen – providing bright colour, contrast, lower power consumption and faster response times than ever before. The K01 also features super-slim design, measuring 12.9mm1 front to back, making each handset portable and stylish in equal measure.

The new user interface lets users quickly browse to their favourite features, saving time and making the mobile experience more enjoyable. The K01 also features a fast 1GHz2 processer and storage can be expanded up to 32GB[iii] using microSDHC cards, allowing users to store their favourite movies, music and games with plenty of room to spare.

New Toshiba technologies at the Innovation Hub

As well as showcasing the new additions to its mobile line-up, Toshiba will be displaying a range of new mobile technologies in a special area within the Toshiba stand called the Innovation Hub.

The Innovation Hub will display a range of software solutions developed by Toshiba to improve the mobile user experience. Visitors will be able to see a range of new technologies for the very first time, including the mobile implementation of Resolution+ image tuning technology fostered from Toshiba’s REGZA TVs. Re-developed for Toshiba mobile handsets, Resolution+ improves video playback by analysing image definition and intelligently upscaling video quality to offer a sharper, clearer and richer viewing experience.

Another key development which will be showcased at the Innovation Hub is LCD Control – a technology that ensures users can get the same high-quality images with no loss of contrast in difficult lighting conditions. For example, when using a mobile in bright sunlight, the reflection and effect on image contrast often makes using a handset for viewing videos and images difficult. LCD Control boosts contrast detail to levels that are unaffected by the bright lighting, providing a hassle-free way to check messages, write emails or even watch videos under daylight conditions.

Toshiba will also be demonstrating Voice Translation – a helpful programme that uses Toshiba’s Speech Recognition, Machine Translation and Speech Synthesis technology to translate different languages[iv], synthesize back into a voice and repeat back in real time, without the need for an internet connection. Originally developed for Toshiba notebooks, Voice Translation is an ideal tool for international business use or holidays, allowing users to communicate easily using their mobile phone, wherever they are in the world.

More Toshiba laptops and netbooks with embedded Mobile Broadband

Toshiba’s new line-up of Mobile Broadband-enabled laptops will also be showcased, including new versions of its recently announced 25.7 cm (10.1″) Toshiba mini NB300 and mini NB305 netbooks, featuring embedded Mobile Broadband modules. The availability of a mobile data connection with data rates up to 7.2 Megabit per second[v], together with an outstanding battery life of up to 11 hours and a light weight of only 1.33 kg, make these netbooks ideal as highly portable companions. In addition, Toshiba is also debuting Mobile Broadband-ready versions of the recently unveiled professional laptops targeted at small offices and companies, medium businesses and large enterprises: the Tecra M11, A11 and S11, and the ultra-slim Satellite Pro T110 and Satellite Pro T130. For consumers, Toshiba offers the Satellite T110 and Satellite T130 with embedded Mobile Broadband.

Toshiba’s multi-screen solution makes sharing media easier than ever

As well as debuting a new mobile line-up and showcasing it’s latest mobile broadband laptops and netbooks, Toshiba will also be demonstrating first-hand its vision for a world of multiple interacting devices that will allow users to share photos, music and movies across different screens at the touch of a button.

The Toshiba Media Controller (TMC) software allows users to stream content across connected multimedia devices with ease, regardless of screen size. Users can share media from their handset to a PC, notebook, or television, and vice versa across a network (whether a home network, enterprise network or WLAN), using the easy to set-up device. Toshiba is committed to offering users a connected world, where devices are used together to form a simple, effective media offering regardless of screen size.

Samsung Wave: 3.3-inch Super AMOLED, Bada OS, 1GHz CPU, no Multitouch

Another smartphone. And Samsung’s Bada OS debut. The Samsung Wave is the first entry into the Bada OS spectrum, where Samsung plans for the Wave to be open to everyone and anyone. And of course what is a smartphone without killer specs? Sammy made sure that the Wave comes in as a tsunami, and that’s where the 1GHz CPU comes in, then a 3.3-inch “Super AMOLED” touchscreen that allows you to actually use it in sunlight, but contains no multitouch; TouchWIZ UI 3.0 is in the new and fresh Bada OS, which allows up to 10 homescreens, and SocialHub for managing all of your email and social media accounts in one window. Other specs include, a 5 megapixel camera, aGPS, accelerometer, 802.11n Wi-Fi, 2GB or 8GB of storage space, microSD expansion slot, multi-codec support for DivX, XviD, MP3 and WMV, and support for virtual 5.1 surround sound and 720p recording / decoding. Samsung Apps will be your main app store if you’re wondering, and full Flash support is also present, which will be available in over 50 countries. So far the Wave isn’t really a tsunami, but it does pack in some great features to consider. Case in point: we’re skeptical. PR after the jump. Oh, and look for it sometime in April.

Samsung Delivers Brilliant New Smart Phone Experience

with Launch of Samsung Wave

· Full touch Super AMOLED offers the best ever viewing quality on a mobile

· Social Hub brings all your social networks together in one, unified solution

· TouchWiz 3.0 expands Smartphone usability to the next level

February 14th, 2010, Barcelona, Spain – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced the launch of the Samsung Wave (Model: S8500). This is the first mobile handset to be released on Samsung’s new, open mobile platform, Samsung bada, and the cornerstone of the company’s commitment to provide a smartphone for every lifestyle.

The Samsung Wave offers a Super AMOLED 3.3″ display that makes the screen truly come alive, a Social Hub to bring you closer to your contacts and connections, and TouchWiz 3.0 for an intuitive and hugely customizable user interface. The Wave’s high-speed CPU ensures swift, smooth application experiences and multi-tasking, making the device an always-on mobile multimedia companion. The Samsung Wave has been built to offer users an unrivalled level of performance, customization and choice in how they connect with their world. The stunning full touch mobile will be available globally from April 2010.

“The Samsung Wave truly demonstrates our commitment to deliver rich, connected and innovative smartphone experiences to everyone,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung Wave sees our platform vision become a reality. For the first time, developers have the freedom to create applications across multiple platforms, for consumption on a huge range of devices. In the Wave, our developer partners can see the ocean of opportunity that is offered by the bada mobile platform and our device technology,” he said.

Super AMOLED – Seeing is believing

With the Samsung Wave, seeing really is believing as it features the world’s first Super AMOLED display; delivering an unrivalled screen experience on a smartphone. The Super AMOLED offers much brighter, clearer, and less reflective AMOLED OnCell display, featuring a high resolution WVGA (800×480 pixels) screen with mDNIe (mobile Digital Natural Image engine) technology. DNIe technology is proven display technology which incorporated to Samsung’s LCD TV and LED TV lineups. With a free viewing angle and super fast response, the Samsung Wave display provides superb image quality for viewing both videos and photos.

Social Hub – my communities at my hand

Social Hub has been designed from the ground up to seamlessly integrate all major portal’s email, IM and SNS services directly into the Samsung Wave. With its TouchWiz 3.0 UI, it provides users easy-flow integrated experience of messaging, managing contacts and viewing calendar events. Social Hub is powered by the amazing push technology to deliver email messages, calendar events and SNS updates in real-time.

TouchWiz 3.0 UI – new and improved

The Samsung Wave provides superior levels of choice to all users via its fully customizable menus and home-page. For those who demand access to their social networking sites at all times, the device allows users to change the layout of the home-page to allow instant access to Twitter, Facebook and a host of other social networking services. For those who love music, the device home-page can be turned into an intuitive media player; while for those who take and share a lot of photos, the home page can be customized to feature favourite images. Users will also benefit from Quick Panel, a way of prioritizing and aggregating applications into one screen for instant access.

With its eye-catchingly brilliant screen, Samsung’s latest TouchWiz 3.0 user interface gives a tactile, intuitive user experience, and includes iconic new features such as motion UI, Smart Unlock and customizable widget screen.

Speed, performance and beauty

The Samsung Wave benefits from a superb 1GHz processor which offers users the best graphic performance available today. Its speed makes the touch screen user interface incredibly responsive and intuitive and, more importantly, means that the 3D and memory-intensive graphic and video performance is unsurpassed.

The Samsung Wave is also one of the most attractive devices with seamless, streamlined body that has no parting or harsh lines. A beautiful and strong tempered glass display perfectly complements and enhances the vividness of the Super AMOLED display. Furthermore, with anti-smudge technology, those greasy thumb prints are a thing of the past.

Multimedia features and connectivity

Multi-codec support for DivX Xvid, MP4 and WMV, and support for virtual 5.1 surround sound delivery transforms the device into a personal entertainment system and HD video (720p) decoding and recording capabilities make the Samsung Wave an outstanding device for capturing, sharing and viewing video.

For the first time in the world, Samsung Wave is incorporated Bluetooth® 3.0 and WiFi 802.11n standard.

Samsung Apps: unlimited expandability

Samsung’s bada platform allows mobile users to simply and easily download an abundance of applications from Samsung Apps, an integrated application store accessible from the device and online. Featuring a wealth of games, navigation, social networking, e-book, health and lifestyle applications, Samsung Apps gives users instant access to a huge choice of mobile experiences.

Samsung established its mobile application ecosystem through the launch of Samsung Mobile Innovator in 2008 and the Samsung Application Seller Site followed by Samsung Application Store as another key element of this offering. Already launched in the UK, France, Italy, Singapore, Germany, Brazil and China, this will be expanded to more than 50 countries all over the world in 2010.

Samsung is exhibiting at Mobile World Congress 2010, at Hall 8, Stand 8b 169.

Project Pink “Turtle” phone seen at the FCC

Of the two Project Pink phones that were humorously leaked in December, the Pure and Turtle, a turtle-shaped phone with a round keyboard and shell seems to be the first handset seen and approved by the FCC. Since it is a Microsoft/Danger-designed phone and the speculated replacement for the Sidekick, then you would think it would be produced by Sharp, which is the current manufacturer of the aging Sidekick. In a search of the FCC's Authorized Equipment database, Sharp is revealed to have been authorized for a CDMA-based handset, which an FCC label matches the renderings leaked last year. With all of these details uncovered, and info from large media like WSJ and CNET, you can be sure that these “teen smartphones” will be used soon enough.

App Store Hits 150,000 Apps, 75% of It Will Cost You

Apple’s App Store has reached the 150,000 apps milestone this week. As the world's largest (and best) mobile application store, the iPhone and iPod Touch have access to over 27,000 books and over 28,000 games, which have generated over 3 billion downloads since its launch in July of 2008. Back in December of ‘08, O’Reilly examined the App Store, and found that 22% of the then small 10,000 applications were provided for free by the developers. Now things have changed nearly 2 years later.

According to analytics company Distimo, the App Store's 150,000 app catalog has a ratio of 75% paid apps to only 25% free apps; compare that to the open-source and rapidly growing Android Market, and you’ll find a ratio of 60% paid to 40% free. And if you remember (maybe if you read LaptopMemo), at the January 27th iPad announcement, Steve Jobs told the media that the App Store contained over 140,000 apps. That extra 10,000 came within 16 days of the original announcement.

How Many Oranges Does it Take to Charge An Apple iPhone?

How many Jaffa oranges does it take to charge an Apple? I won’t spoil anything juicy for you, but I will say that you’ll probably want to eat more than a whole bag of oranges, and you will be taken back in amazement. The absolutely brilliant video is after the break, as usual. [Via Daily iPhone Blog]

Samsung’s S8500 Wave with Bada OS caught in the wild with specs

Yes, everyone. Another phone, another phone OS. Samsung’s new Bada OS is so far exclusive to the S8500 Wave, the first Bluetotth 3.0 phone. Bluetooth wasn’t exactly in the list of leaked specs, but we can at least suppose 2.0 is onboard. Specs for this newcomer are a 3.3 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, 720p video, DivX support, 2GB internal memory with microSD expansion, HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, 1 GHz processor, 3.5mm headphone jack, a sleek aluminum body, 1500 mAh battery, and the Bada OS with Touchwiz 3.0 UI. For now we’ll have to wait to get the full list of specs, availability, Bada OS performance, and price. The good news is all of that will be in the limelight next week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

WSJ: Windows Mobile 7 to be announced at MWC 2010, Project Pink phones to arrive in Spring

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Windows Mobile 7 will indeed be launching at the Mobile World Congress 2010 on Monday. They have also confirmed that Steve Ballmer will head the show, and that WM7 will borrow a Zune-like UI, which would bring life and style to the aging and boring OS. As for the Project Pink, phones they will not make an appearance at MWC, and instead will be released sometime in Spring to replace the T-MObile Sidekick line. Project pink phones will be directed at teens and will launch on Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. As usual, not bad WSJ.

Exclusive: HTC Lineup For MWC Is “Incredible”? Apple “beware”??

While searching for juicy tidbits on HTC’s upcoming product line (the HTC Legend, Incredible, Bravo, and Supersonic) I stumbled across an interesting tweet by @claudineb of The Daily Telegraph. Although it does make sense that there would be an embargo, if you say the words “Apple beware” then something is brewing inside HTC? Not only that but in the slide after the jump you’ll see she says, “It’s not an iPhone killer per say, but brings some lovely, well-implemented new ideas to the table that Apple should take note of.” If Apple should take notes then it’s for more than one phone, right?

Any tipsters that want to come forth please do so now. [Thanks! Claudine]

HP Compaq Airlife 100 is the Android Netbook You’ve Always Wanted

I wouldn’t buy it, but you would, wouldn’t you? The HP Compaq Airlife 100 is probably the most exciting computer HP Compaq has ever created. With a keyboard, 10.1-inch touchscreen, runs Android  (looks like 1.6 Donut), 16GB SSD, Wi-Fi, a 3G connection which will be on the Telefónica network in Spain, an SD card slot, and a camera. It’s probably a top pick for iPad-haters.

The only small problem is that it only is going to be in HP Spain for now, but when (and if) if comes to the US, you’ll probably see the Mini branding, which isn’t a bad thing actually. [SlashGear]

A Mosquito…Taken Down By the Death Star Laser Gun

In the video at the link below you’ll soon be seeing a sorry mosquito that gets killed by the “Death Star Laser Gun”. At this year's Technology, Entertainment and Design conference, Nathan Myhrvold demonstrated the Death Star Laser Gun by killing one of these little pests.

The laser gun tracks down and kills mosquitoes, and was created from parts on eBay to quell mosquitoes that cause malaria in places mainly like Africa. As Myhrvold explained, a child dies every 49 seconds from malaria, and right now his team is trying to find out ways to make this more cost-effective. The laser used on stage was a green light, and not a real laser, for safety reasons, which isn’t lethal, but also displayed a video of this super weapon in action.  [Wired via Death Star Mosquito Zapper]
